On 24th January 1963 the folk of Walton woke to an incredible sight
 

THE SEA HAD FROZEN
 

Ice floes extended as far as the end of the pier and the lifeboat was out of action all day

These pictures were taken by 17-year-old Peter Frost and his colleague
